The Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law is dedicated to preparing our students for success by giving them the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve their career goals and empowering them to make a difference.

Our location, in the heart of the state capital, enhances everything about the students’ experiences. The school is a short walk from the state’s courts, the legislature, and major law firms, all of which give students the opportunity to observe the law in action and to gain practical experience.

IU McKinney is located on the Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis campus, and enjoys active collaboration with the IU Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Social Work and Informatics and Computing, along with the Kelley School of Business and the Fairbanks School of Public Health.

Our students will benefit from the learning opportunities these partnerships provide, not the least of which are the eight joint-degree programs that are available in cooperation with these schools.

Students can chose between our fulltime, three-year program and our part-time, four-year evening program. With either program, all students will learn from top faculty, get hands-on experience in the practice of law, and have the option of focusing their studies in a specialized legal area.

Students also may enhance their J.D. degrees by earning a certificate designed to provide in-depth exposure to a specific area of law. These certificates also demonstrate a student’s expertise to potential employers. Graduate certificates are offered in Advocacy Skills, Corporate and Commercial Law, Criminal Law, Environmental and Natural Resources Law, Health Law, Intellectual Property Law and International and Comparative Law.

At the conclusion of their legal educations, our students are ready to join our alumni, more than 11,000 strong, who live and practice all over the world.

The law school is named for Robert H. McKinney, a distinguished lawyer, businessman and civic leader who received his law degree from IU in 1952. A founding partner at Bose McKinney & Evans LLP, McKinney also served as chairman and CEO of First Indiana Corporation, parent company of First Indiana Bank, until his retirement in 2005.
